what are some possible engine swaps for a 96 audi a4 2.8 quattro?
You guys make it seem like because it has 12 valves it will never make decent power. Many of the highest performing engines in the world have 2 valves per cylinder. The probelem it has now is that the valves are too small for it to breathe well. Port and polish, larger valves, bigger cams. That's it for head work. Bore the block .030 over with new pistons. Get the compression ratio down a little, maybe 9:1. Then find a vortech supercharger and make, or have made, a custom bracket for it. Get pullies for 9psi of boost. Bore out the throttle body and port match the intake mani to the heads. Buy or build long tube headers into 2.5inch true dual exhaust with a crossover pipe, or single 3 inch exhaust. Use high flow cats and free flowing mufflers.
This will cost is the $4000 range and will make 400hp easy. That's if you do the work yourself. Expect $7-8000 to have it done for you.

If you're doing it, you should do it right as your safety depends on it.
That's not to mention getting it to work reliably. So you can either factor in the cost of doing it twice, or proper parts, labor (including machining) and all the other small details aesthetic upgrades.
Good rule of thumb, bud, unless it's a smallblock chev, take your realistic estimated figure and double it.
I'm sure if you swap in a stock motor without even resealing it you can do it for around 5 points, but whats the point? If you're doing a swap, you might as well do **** to it while its out.

i agree 10k, if you do the swap right and upgrade what you will eventually upgrade. but an s4 engine can be had for under a grand. it was a factory engine in our chassis so the rest is plug an play if you have everything for the s4 front. it all just turns around to buy an s4. BUT i somehow found a good 4.2 engine for $250 so i think i will keep my a4 and make this 4.2 fit.

^^aka more trouble than buying an s4. the only real motor swaps that are practical are a 4.2 v8 or any for of the inline 5. Both bolt up to the tranny and somehow fit in the small engine bay of the a4. Your gonna spend some money but you gonna have a custom car that you built vs a cookie cutter s4. Look around for a while you can find engines cheap. I got a good v8 for 250. the only thing i have to buy to make it happen now is a form of stand alone. Your gonna of course spend more if you have a shop do it or you go a turbo route.
