B5's are rare at the junkyard in my area... and theres always these dudes that sit around all day at the junkyard waiting for good looking cars (eg. A4's Bmw's, Mercedes) and they will just tear it apart. i swear i've been to the junkyard over 20 times looking for B5 parts and every time i've gone either the engine is gone or the cylinder heads are missing... and if the engine is there the harness is all cut up and missing and crap... so thats why i was thinking if i buy a complete B5 A4 1.8T thats not running i can just take the engine, harness, ecu and everything i need that way if im missing something i can just go to the 1.8t a4 i bought knowing its still there... versus going back to the junkyard and searching for parts that i dont know is good or still there... and besides once im done with the donor car im going to either part it out or sell it to the junkyard haha!

also can anyone confirm whether or not i have to use the VAG-COM at all for this swap? i dont have a vag com so i am kinda concerned.

bingo. buy a junkuard motor for a few hundred and rebuild it. and if you are going to do that, get an 06a block. any awm, aug, amb, hell any jetta 1.8t or bettle 1.8t will work, but youd need accesories s probably best to stay with a longitudinal 06a block. and i say go with 06a because the aftermarket support is there, especially when talking integrated engineering products.

Try car-part.com, there's almost always something good on there. But if there are no good aprts cars around then you'll be best off buying a parts car, but if you're asking all these basic questions I have doubts about your ability to rebuild a motor, it's not an easy task. You will definitely need a vagcom, in fact you should've got one a long time ago.

06A is easier to do a stroker kit on but if doing a 1.8-1.9 liter build the 058 is just as easy to do and uses the same rods and pistons as a 06A.

I sell everything needed to do a full engine build top/bottom, which includes parts from IE and other companies for brands IE doesn't carry.

Madcow... I understand you have doubts about my abilities but you should never judge a man when u seriously dont know him... I dont have to prove anything to you bro. Im not an audi expert thats why i come with all these "basic questions"... I mostly work on domestic cars at work and we sometimes get foriegns in... So before i swap a motor i want to be 100% sure that theres no secret thing to the swap that i dont know about... Like the vagcom... See i didnt know i needed that. And i also didnt know which motor was best for the swap... So thanks to all the friendly people on here thats out to help each other and not judge others, i am starting to understand more and more about the swap.

i dont plan on any stroking the motor ... I just want to rebuild the whole motor ex. New rings bearings pistons crank cams valves lifters and **** like that... I just wanna start fresh i dont wanna get a 1.8t that has sludge problems or horrible carbon build up on the valves and pistons haha.

I didn't mean to come across that way, it's just that the majority of people that post things like that are getting in way over their head. If you have experience then great, these motors are pretty simple compared to most German motors, you should have no problem rebuilding it. Just make sure you have a good valve spring compressor because they're recessed really deep into the tiny lifter bores. Walky_talky posted a good DIY on how to do this, should be easy to find.

what the hells the difference if youre rebuilding it? you might as well pay a few hundred for a junkyard motor, clean it up, and make a project out of it. sludge is easily taken car of, as well as carbon. its called a scraper. trust me. youll be happy getting a junkyard motor and rebuilding it. just make sure to pull a couple main and rod caps to make sure the journals are good. if they are, youre in business

If you're gonna replace all that then why not spend the extra couple hundred and go 2.0?
