hey there i have a 98 a4 quattro, and being reading the post and pretty sure the whinning noise from the right rear tire is the wheel bearing about to go. I was wondering if this is a do it yourself or a shop job. Can someone please post pictures or instructions on how to do the procedures.

Also from reading the post my sounds a lot better in shape but you never know so just wanted to check if its safe to drive, will it end up breaking down and leaving me stranded or cause some other probelms. thanks guys .

 

There are procedures on AudiWorld.com in the Tech area that will walk you through it. You may find slight differences between your car and the one in the DIY (as I found yesterday). Scroll down a bit and read my post called "don't you just hate a fruitless wrench day" - you'll see the issues I ran into.

 

you can do it yourself but you need a press to push in the new bearing or be very talented and use a bit of wood and a malet and pound it in. at my local shop it costs roughly 140 in labor and the bearing from blauparts is 55. ive done both shop and at home, shop is easier but if you want to save some money and have metric tools and confidnce in mechaincal skillz do it yourself, it took me about 3 hours because i had a PITA time getting the old bearing out and new on in.

 

is it safe to drive or would recommend changing. i dont drive too often sometimes at work they ask you to drive being stuck at work is alright they pay hourly. but let me know the cons of continuing to drive like this.

 

My bad wheel bearing has held out for a long time although it's gotten really loud lately and I'm in the process of doing a second go-round to get it out. The risks you run involve destroying your ABS sensor, either due to bearing wear or due to you trying to remove the f*cking thing when you do the job, and there is a risk of the bearing seizing up if it completely fails. That would be dangerous.

 

im replacing mine tomorow. Gonna do all the work but bring it to a shop to have them press it out then back in. I dont trust myself to do the pressing but the DIY looks easy for the other crap.

 

Rear Wheel Bearing Change

 

is March the month where everyones wheel bearing goes bad?

My wheel bearing (RL ) is doing the same thing. Got quoted a price of 224.00 to have it replaced.
Theres a VW/Audi mechanic by my house and only specializes in those vehicles and gave me that quote. That also includes the bearing which i think was 64 bucks. Labor was like 160something he said.

is that a good price? I'd take the challenge of doing it myself but im limited when it comes to tools.

 

depending on if that is the front or rear you might want to just have him do it. I'd say for the rear don't but the front can have some possible issues (ei the devil bolt/pinch bolt). If you've removed it recently then I say do it yourself. Removing the hub is fairly simple, then you can take it to a shop with the new bearing and have them remove and press it in. Local place charged me $20 a bearing.

 

my brother had already replaced the rear right bearing and now the rear left is on its way.
Im up for the challenge of removing it myself and taking it to a shop so they can press it in but my cousin has his car in my garage and like the dumbass i am I didnt take his keys. At least I would of been able to just leave it in the driveway also, there is only about a 3 foot gap between my drivers side door and his passenger door ( he has an escalade ) and its in my garage for the next two - three weeks while he is away on his honeymoon.
