Where does the oil temp gauge get it's data from?

Where does the oil temp gauge get it's data from?

I can't seem to find any sensors or sending units for the oil temp gauge. I can't find anything at all for that matter.

Can someone direct me to the answer, or at least point me in the right direction?

The sensor at the bottom of the oil pan. My understanding is that this also provides oil level information.

I know the sensor you're talking about and I too thought it was just for oil level.

I was wondering if anyone has had the sensor fail my gage freaks out and goes to complete hot and then back down over and over I know it's a problem because it does it right at start up
