Default Who's modded their door panels for 6.5" speakers?

I want speakers that aren't total crap without having to pay $68 for a good woofer that's still hurt by being only 4".

I do not want to mold fiberglass or do anything like that.

Anyone mod their door panels for 6.5"s simply? Just cut out the old grill and cut a bigger spot and put a generic mesh 6.5" speaker grill in there? It looks like it might be doable to me.

I was thinking about doing this as well, those speakers are absolutely terrible.

if done well i bet it could look stock, if not better. My only concern would be gettin a good chamber behind the cone so you don't lose sound quality. Would you go with 2 ways or 3?

I have 5.25's in there.... any bigger and you'll have to do some pretty serious cutting/fabbing.

was there a lot of hacking involved to get the 5.25's to fit right?

How'd you do it? Got pics?

I will be doing 2 ways, either Rainbow Audio or custom, designed by me (I am a hobbyist speaker designer and designed/built some of my home theater speakers as well, though I'm not going to bother putting as much detail into car speakers). I have one of the lower level Rainbow component sets (it was still like $300 though)

I've got an 01 with the bose symphony system in it but the guy who had the car before me blew a couple of the speakers, i've heard that you can only use 2 ohm speakers with that system though? if thats true then what're some good 2 ohm speakers? almost all i can find is 4 ohm

my setup is pretty bad looking, i made some 1/4" wood brackets. It has held for like 3 years with no problems though. I need to re-do it eventually with better brackets and dynamat the inside of the door.
