Default '02 A4 1.8T - thermostate diagnostic help

temp guage stays at C for long period of time, then rises to 1/4 and heater works. I suspect thermostat, anything else I need to check before replacing...Replaced temp sensor, problem still exists;

thanks,

note that I changed out timing belt 5 K miles ago...

Should have done the theromstat when you did the t/b. The ECT sensor could be casuing the gauge to misbehave but I dont know how to check that without buying a new one.

Yea, the ECT (engine coolant temparture) sensor is cheap (<$10 from dealership) and is the first thing to do. I assume that's what you did when you say temp sensor.

As for the thermostat, it would have been easier to do with the TB but it's not necessary. I was going to do it when I did my TB 5k miles ago too but read that it's a fairly easy change and people recommended it be done when it goes rather than preemptively due to it's high cost (not just the t-stat but the housing as well).

I can't think of anything else for you to check before doing this, sorry.

the 02 thermostat is no where near the timing belt so it really doesnt help to do it with the TB. the thermostat is below the throttle body and kind of behind the alternator. I just replaced mine about 2 months ago. There was no option for me to just replace the housing or sensor or anything, it was all one part. I got mine from aboveallmotorwerks.com and it was like $77 for the oem part.

What? You don't have an 02 1.8T then. Any 1.8T engine after 2001 has the thermostat behind the timing belt, the AEB and ATW block has the seperate thermostat by the bottom of the motor on the driver side.

I have the Bentley manual but can't find the info for either the sensor light or the thermostat...

it would help if I could spell "thermostat" when searching...Shane is right as the thermostat is behind the alternator, not part of the timing belt replacement proceedure, and is not servicable. You need to replace the entire housing...
