1.8 timing belt questions
There was a problem with the B-5 model 1.8 T motors throwing the timing belt due to the tensioner going bad between 80 and 100,000 miles. The fix Audi gave was to replace the timing belt and tensioner at the 80,000 mile mark. They appear to continue to follow this recommendation with the B-6 model. I'm not sure about the newer model though.
I didnt read everyone elses posts, But I just did mine with the ECS kit. By my self. It really wasnt hard at all..Got quoted 1500 at stealership..I saved my self 1100 dollars. I guess you could say thats a good deal
Just call Rices they will do it under 700 and then you have the warr behind the work too. I would say I will help you do it (about 4 now and far easier then the 3 2.8L) but just got a promo and will be moving away from B-ville here soon. If you have the funds and time....I could save a weekend and change the ATF..I have the pump and tools to use.

I am thinking i might need to take mine back apart because the outer tensioner bounces a little and i can feel it in the car at idle so i think i might need to try re-centering one of the pulleys. Once i get over about 3K it smooths right out and stops bouncing (i can touch the tensioner and feel it's not bouncing once it gets over 3K). Will do that while i have the turbo out and am installing a new exhaust i think. should be all ready to play this spring.

Howdo youre-center it? Did you succeed at stopping the wobbling?
hey SA3, i replied to your PM.
And yes, that is the same tensioner that is bouncing on mine.
But like i said in the PM, waiting on a credit for my K04 so i can get a GTRS and put it all back together so i have not been able to turn the engine over to see if i did recenter it and solved the issue.

the only problem with waiting is that if it does go bad, due to the type of engines that at in the a4, if the timing belt goes bad it will cause internal damage to the engine which will set you back many times more than just the timing belt installatiON but you will also have to get new valves and what not made. tHat is why people it is recomended to change it at around 80 or 85k miles
hey guys, this thread is from feb. sa3dos had brought it back to ask me about the bouncing tentioner that i had mentioned 3 months ago and if i had a fix for it. Thanks for the info though, i'm sure it will be searched on at some point.
