Default 2002 B6 A4 1.8T Sport - Gutless :o(

Hi all,

I recently bought 2002 B6 A4 1.8T Sport. It's the first car i've drove with a turbo and i'm not sure how it should drive when at it's best. When I first bought it, it seemed to be fine. It accelerated ok, up through the gears however there was a bit of lag on the turbo which I assumed was normal. Occasionally when you put your foot down the RPM dial shot round and you could hear the engine/turbo revving up/whistling but then the RPM dial drops again without giving any or much power to the car, this could happen a couple of times in a row. My suspicions at this point where that maybe there was a boost leak issue of some kind. On the way to work this morning the performance of the car had diminished considerably! The car almost struggles to pull away, it revs high but only crawls up to speed (I thought i'd left the handbrake on at first) You can here the turbo spinning up but there is no performance. putting your foot down just revs the engine high on the RPM clock but non of the power is transferring to the wheels. It seems when the cars picked up a bit of momentum it runs a little bit better but pulling off is painful and the car just has no gutts. I've had a search around these forums and come across the term limp mode, has anyone come across this issue before?

I have a VAGCOM, however i'm still trying to work out how it works, I did an engine scan and 2 faults were returned;

2 Faults Found:

17698 - Coolant Temp Sensor at Radiator Outlet (G83): Signal too Small
P1290 -- 002 -- Lower Limit Exceeded - Intermittent
16956 - Brake Switch (F): Short to GND
P0572 -- 008 -- Implausible Signal

Readiness: 0000 0000

I've since cleared the faults so will re-scan tomorrow after a drive to make sure the faults weren't ancient ones.

I also tried some data logging but to be completely honest I'm pretty clueless with this VAGCOM at the moment; (these were with the engine running idle I think, I might have tapped the accelerator, but not driving)

Check your clutch. That's what it seems like as you describe the symptoms.
