Default 2004 A4 1.8Turbo

Hello, I am in the process of buying an '04 1.8L Turbo. I picked up the car this morning and took it to a shop who specializes in audi's just to make sure everything is fine on the car before I hand over the money. when I dropped it off at the shop the mechanic told me that he thinks they are crap and I should not get it because all they do is break down and have problems. He hasnt actually checked through the car yet, and i have driven it around quite a bit with no problems but those were his opinions. Is this true? the car has 103k miles on it. Timing belt and a few other things have been replaced in the motor already. Any input will do. Thanks

its honestly a love hate relationship. The car might run fine for you but it also might not. These cars require alot of maintainence. But its worth the hassel to drive such a fine automobile!

That's what I was thinking. I owned a '03 2.0 quattro 6 speed manual a few years back and never had a problem with it. Unfortunately, a AAA driver didnt know how to drive and rear ended me going about 30 so I downgraded to a Fusion and have been dying to get another audi. Hopefully this car pans out, this forum will be a big help.

first off find a new mechanic that doesn't have a warped opinion. I'd be worried about him making reasonable conclusions about repairs if he is already predisposed to dislike the vehicle. 103k for an 04 is pretty good mileage. Get all the maintenance documentation you can and find a local VW/Audi shop to take a look at it.

Good luck and welcome back.

if you stay up on your maintenance you'll be fine the a6 not so great alot of issues but the a4 is the more reliable one you have to just check things out and make sure that it has been maintained well like my 2002 a4 was pre-owned and the person who had it before did not keep an eye out on things i just changed the timing belt tensioner and that's all it needed really i might need to clean the lifters up soon cause the oil wasn't kept up on either like i said just don't be afraid to get under the hood and look and listen for things that sound off once everything is back up to par you'll love them best car we bought so far and take it to an audi dealer not just a mechanic they'll do a diagnostic check for free usually as long as its an audi anyways if you have any more questions just hit me up any time I'll be glad to help in any way i can

Thanks for the input. I will definitely take it in to an Audi dealer this week. I know the water pump had gone out so that was replaced and he also replaced the timing belt already. The car seems to run great so far so hopefully that's the case. The first mechanic I took it too said he couldn't find anything wrong with it but he didn't do a diagnostics test on it

Yeah I definitely am not going back there. The guy tried to charge an arm and a leg ($1500)
To replace the air intake housing, a new windshield washer reservoir and back break rotors. I have never really worked on cars before but just reading over these forums for a few hours I think I could do that myself for a lot less than that.
