A4 1.8T ?'s...
Hello, I've been reading the forum for a little while and doing a lot of searching. I still have some questions that have probably been answered but I couldn't find.
I just bought an '04 A4 1.8T with 79,000 miles. The price was $15,000 which I don't think is too bad, pluswas one of the only dealers to pay what I got for my trade in.It had one owner, and I drove it and drove very nice, so I got it. I am curious about the computer chips I keep reading about. Does every A4 come with one, or is that something optional I have to do myself? The mpg reading seems to be stuck on the same number, I was wondering if that could be fixed by resetting the computer. I am going to take it to a dealer for an oil change and have them look the car over, which I should of done before I got it.
Also, the stereo is plenty nice for me. Does anyone know ifthe head unit can can be pulled out so I could attach a wire in the back for my ipod and run it to the front?
Thanks for any input...

Welcome!
Your car has an ECU, its the "brain" of the car. The chipping your talking about is an aftermarket mod that changes the way the ECU controls the car. it does a number of things like increases boost and such.
as far as the MPG reading, there are two readings...one is an avg and one is instantaneous, or close to it. the one that isn't changing is most likely the avg which when not reset, averaged over a very long time period, will not change very often or ever. there is a toggle on the windshield wiper control arm which allows to scroll between the deisplay options.
I'm not familiar with the IPOD hookup but i know people are doing it.

Alright, first off your car has a computer in it. you can buy "performance software" that you can have programmed over the stock software which will give you a nice performance boost, very very highly recommended. Now for the B6 style A4s (2002 thru 2005 i think if i remember right) APR is the general choice. APR has a few different programs you can chose from. APR Stage 1 is just the programming for a stock engine and comes in 91oct, 93oct, and 100oct which all go for about $499 plus a little for the installation. APR also has a Stage 1+ package which is modified to be used with 386cc fuel injectors (EFIs) and also comes in the three different octanes. The Stage 1+ software also costs $499 and you can find the EFIs for about $350, this is what i did and was very happy with the performance increase.
You can buy more then one program and switch them back and forth using one of the levers on the steering wheel. I have 93oct and 100oct programs on mine. I was originally going to go with the stock and 93oct so i could go back to stock programming if i didn't want to shell out the loot on 93oct gas but since i have a upgraded turbo in the car which requires special programming the stock programming would have been useless to me so i went with the 100oct as my second program (there was a special when i had my chip installed and i got the second program for free)
there are two different displays for the MPH if i remember correctly. you might be looking at the "Average MPG" which unless you are driving it very differently from how it was before will likely stay close to the same average and change very slowly. I would have to go look to remember exactly how to reset it, but it's one of the buttons on the lever that changes the display.
Not sure about patching into the back of the head unit, i tried that with my M3 and wasn't able to do it. just have an Ipod FM transmitter now which i use for my laptop and mp3 player and it allows me to use it in any car.
Hope that helps.

Thanks for the info. I will probably stick with what is in there. I am not super big into adding to cars. It's a nice car and they seem to last a long time mileage wise and don't depreciate too much in value. I still have to pick up the manual from the dealer.
Here is some info about the Ipod cable, this DIY shows the cables you would need and a real cool way to make the install look clean.

1) in NY the usual octane is 93 and I've never seen higher. Where would you get the 100oct?
2) If you get 93 oct and stock programs, how do you switch it? I heard it's the cruise control lever but doesn't that **** up the cruise control?
3) If you got the two programs, you could just switch back to normal for service this way they dont see it and void the warranty, right?
Here is a different iPod integration DIY that is really informative:
