It's a project, somewhat difficult to go in to without a lot of text so long story (question) short:

Has anyone any knowledge as to if it's possible, to take a (given) A4 3 liter with a manual tranny, and 'neuter' the rear wheel drive output? For the project I only need FWD and from the bit of poking around I've done, it looks like there must be some way to 'lock up' or <whatever> the mid diff so only the front diff is getting used.

I don't want to spend for a FWD tranny - I believe they exist in Europe, just can't afford what that would take if it's in fact true.

Any pointers would be much appreciated.

The quattro system is one of the greatest in the world and costs a lot more than the 2wd version. That car you have 3.0L quattro 6spd is not very easy to find eather. Yes they are plentiful but that combination is extreamly difficult to find. "nutering" it would be a sin. Just sell it and buy yourself a 2wd. I know this isn't much help for what you are trying to do but good god man don't do it.

 

Howdy - thanks for the passionate reply. Yup, I have a couple of working Audis which are hands down, no contest the most incredible things I've ever driven. Sadly the A4 was rolled in to a ball and isn't going to ever be an Audi again. That said, where might one look for a FWD manual in North America? I'm in Quebec, Canada... where Quattros are *really* handy and get their share of use and abuse. I've never seen a FWD only up this way ever.

look in cali...lots of fwd audis there and im sure plenty of manual ones.there and florida,but thats a bit far i know

 

To make a quattro car FWD you have to get the center diff(tosen) welded up, disconnect the driveshaft. You will also have to unplug the ABS since it will notice that there is no power going to the rear wheels and will keep slaming on the front brakes to slow down those 2 wheels.

Thanks for the tip re the ABS - I wouldn't have thought of that issue.

The weld-up / driveshaft is somewhat 'par for the course', just wondering if there's any way to remove the center diff and replace it or bypass it with something somewhat off the shelf.

Well if you took the center diff off your car there wouldn't be power going to your front diff. Might check to see if there is something on the end of the FWD transmission that sends the power back to the front diff or if it is a completely different design all together.
