Angry A4 B6 Fuel filter change

This might sound funny to others but honestly its not! I was servicing my car, I managed to everything else but When I got to the fuel filter, I had a problem. This A4 is a 2.0L 2001 model with just one fuel line in and one fuel line out. I managed to dislodge the filter from the plastic bracket ok. My nightmare was to disconnect the old filter and stick in a new one. The lines are not the user-friendly ones (pull-back-tab mechanism), they are just push-on type but are so hard to remove that I had to leave it in case I broke them. ANY TRICKS/TECHNIQUE THAT I MIGHT EMPLOY? You wonder why there are so hard!
Advice will be appreciated but please do not reply with ansas like: take it to the dealer!

Did you push in on the tabs to pull the clip out?

They are a PITA, one you're supposed to push the side, the other one you push the tabs in so that it releases... They never work the way they're supposed to. I broke mine, but it doesn't leak. Be careful with them though.

Thanks Dan1969, at least I am happy that I am not a pansy, Now that they have proved to be a P.I.T.A even to others then I think it was not such a clever design. I will calm down a bit more and have a go again when time allows. Guys keep these experiences coming in like this, many will benefit!

There's actually a DIY on A4mods and on Audizine, I think the latter one had someone giving tips on how to disconnect the line with a screwdriver.
