Yeah... I don't smoke clutches on my cars because I drive them pretty sane. I like to step on it, but no 3000 rpm clutch drops in my TT or S4. My cars are really nice, and I want to keep them that way. Not saying anyone else's car isn't, it's just that these are expensive cars, and over the years I've found that if you don't hammer on them they hold up better over the long-run.

I do get the gas mileage out of my S4. I do pretty good with my 6MT car and the Tip car I had before it. I cruise around 65 mph and keep my tires up around 42 - 44 psi. They wear a little faster, but I like the crisp ride and the gas mileage benefits are substantial.

It comes down to whatever makes your boat float I guess.
