I need to get a new car (old one broke) and it is down to a B6 A4 1.8t or passat 2002+ 1.8t. I want a 5 or 6speed trans, AWD would be nice but i dont know if i can afford one. What are the pros and cons of both? which way would be better for me. I am going to mod which ever one i get, and my budget is around 8 grand. Help please.

 

I've owned both.

The Passat is very simular to an A4 B5 (the 2002 Passat is a B5.5).

Passat specific issues:
- The outer plastic covering the Passat front interior door handles/arm rest will peel off.
- Home link hardware in the visor is not very durable.
- More difficult to access oil filter.
- Anti-theft lug bolts (replace)
- A4's build quality seems a little better
- A4's ride/handling seems better
- VW's owner manual has no information on how to service car. Basically states that you need to take it to the dealer.

Other than above, suggest you go by your personal preference.
