Default B6 A4 3.0L Quattro: brake pad & rotor comparisions

Hey all,

The magical hieroglyphic-posting center display recently threw up the sign for "replace your ******* brake pads" and I'd like to see what you all are running and your opinions on them.

With a quick search through the vendors I normally shop (TireRack, Pottermans/Parts4Audis, ECS) it looks like the three main choices are between Mintex, Hawk, and Carbotech. I plan on replacing the rotors with Brembo blanks - unless anyone has something better out there for the price (speak up please).

So without rambling on further - what are your thoughts?

Also, anyone out there running stainless lines? Worth the hassle/money?

Thanks for your time!

Craig

HAWK HPSs are very popular and very good for the street setups.
Stainless lines would increase your braking performance+ good fluid + good rotors.

There's a very lengthy article in the recent Audi Magazine I get as a member of the Audi Club of NA. IIRC it was written by a brake company type, although I could be wrong on that fact. He said that unless you are racing, changing rotors and pads from stock could actually result is poorer braking, and in most cases will NOT result in any better braking. He also said that SS lines are not worth the expense for the average road car, even an enthusiasts car. I needed pads for my rears and bought OEM units.

I went with Hawk HPS when I recently changed my pads, and I was amazed how little brake dust there is on my wheels now. My old OEM pads used to cake my wheels in dust about 2 days after washing. With the Hawks, i can go about two weeks with out any noticeable dust.

If you're not trying to set the world on fire, I went with Hawk HPS (to retain the wear sensor feature, I would have done Ferodo DS2500 if not), SS lines, Zimmerman plain rotors and Ate gold brake fluid. IT wasn't that expensive and it was a DIY. I'm happy. In fact, I was driving a different car today and it took some getting used to their OEM brakes. Oh yea - the lower dust on the Hawks is AWESOME.
