Bought an A4 but zero key fobs work!
Hi all
This weekend I bought an A4 Cabriolet so am finally in the Audi family
However it only came with one key, which does not work remotely... the previous owner just used the key in the lock... and guessed that perhaps the battery had died. I changed the battery but surprise surprise it still doesn't work. (Apologies if this is covered in other threads. I've mainly seen questions where one key fob has stopped working but the owner still has a spare to program it from... whereas I have nothing that works!)
Firstly I want to get the first key fob working, and then I want to get a spare made. Will I need to go to a dealer to get the first one working? Or is there another way? I imagine the battery has been flat for many months.
And would I then be able to buy the right model of key fob (8ZO 837 231 D) from Ebay, get the blade cut, and then program it myself? Or would I need the dealer to do that for me too?
many thanks
Ben

press and hold lock on keyfob for a few seconds while its in ignition
press and hold lock on door for a few seconds
repeat steps above for unlock button
pull key out and try, if it didnt work repeat above.
once that key is done put that key back into ignition and turn to on position but do not start car
get second key and put it in the key hole in door and turn to lock position then turn to unlock position
The 8Z0837231D doesn't appear to be a good number. On the cabs it's a 2 piece key from 04-07 and within that year range depending on the year the remote only portion is either 8Z0837231B 01C or 8Z0837231F 01C, then in 07 the key went to a one piece flip key style. Other than that, all I can contribute is a 2nd key would have to be programmed at your dealer for the immobilizer code reason, or it won't start the car. Even if you find a blank key on ebay that you can cut to your locks, it has to be programmed for immobilizer coding for anti theft reasons. This applies to a master or valet key.
Thanks guys for your replies.
I tried the instructions for re-pairing the key fob I had but it didn't work. Any other ideas, or is it off to the dealer for me?
I forgot to mention I'm in the UK - Jeff could this be why my fob model number isn't what you'd expect? I got the number by opening up the fob I have.
Thanks guys
