you wont be able to do the tranny without a special tool, its like a 12 point hex but has a hole in the middle of it, wierd design. but i would be worried about the timing belt, because if it goes while the car is running, especially around 3000-4000 rpm at highway speeds, you will need a whole new drivetrain if it goes. and your about 30k past when it should have been done. but best of luck to you sir, i hope all goes well on your road trip and i hope your audi keeps care of you while on the road, just remember, these cars are very tempermental, you take care of her, and she will take care of you

I just did a similar trip at the beginning of July. I replaced timing belt (with all the essentials), new coolant, new rear flange, new oil, new tires...everything but the fuel filter...and 50miles from my destination my fuel pump burnt out on me cause my filter was clogged.

Around $500 later i was good to go!

I consider myself lucky that I didn't break down in middle of nowhere montana.

I hope you had a great trip

Boston---->Seattle = 4 days!

Hey all! Just wanted to follow up regarding my trip. I had to postpone it a bit in order to take care of my timing belt. During that time I also had my fuel filter swapped, oil changed, air and cabin filter, coolant flush, coolant flange replaced, new tires balanced and aligned and a massive coating of rain-x.

The 1956mi trip went very smoothly, however until the last 50mi or so. Started hearing a loud drone and now thinking I might have a failing wheel bearing. I'm on my way this morning to have it checked out by RAI Motorsports, those guys are the s***!

This first one is from 0 accelerating up where you can start to hear it.

This one I put the camera down near the floor on the passenger side to better hear the sound. (Accelerating from 40-60mph)
