Default Buzzing all the time... what is the problem???

All,

I noticed a buzzing coming from the middle/back of my 2003 Audi A4 1.8t Quattro about 2 months ago. I'm no mechanic, but I also don't want to pay a mechanic to fix it .

I crawled under my car and can hear the fuel pump buzzing. Is it going bad? Is it struggling because I have a bad fuel pump? Is it not getting enough current?

I always thought when a fuel pump goes - it goes?

A few things I have noticed:
(1) The buzzing happens all the time, while driving and during idle.
(2) When I roll my power windows up/down it quiets down
(3) Sometimes when it is cold it isn't as bad as when it warms up

Can anyone help?

Thanks,
WS

passenger side or drivers side? PAssenger side would be the fuel filter located infront of the rear tire. Fuel pump is drivers side located in the trunk.

If it's coming from the front on the engine area it could be your SAI pump (Secondary Air Injection pump), you can check the connections to make sure there is no air leaking. If it's on the back coming from under the rear passenger seat you have a clogged fuel filter or a pump starting to go. Quick search comes up with a result on how to change both.

man that sai pump is loud. The other day a lady was crossing the street infront of me and it went off and she literally jumped back. She said it sounded like my car was getting ready to take off.

Awesome! Thanks guys!

I think it is the filter. I will get it changed and report back.

I have that sound coming from the passenger side, from somewhere in front of the tire. Going by your description, it should be the filter, right? Cool! I'll have it replace.

Thanks!

I just had The Hum start today. I have a fuel filter already, just haven't put it in yet. Enough working space is a challenge in the garage this time of year.

I should be able to get to it this weekend, but in case I don't if I let it go until next weekend is it ok to put 500 miles on it while humming?

What is the typical replacement cycle for a fuel filter? I haven't changed it since I've had the car and have put 85k miles on it so far.

u run the risk of the filter clogging completly and it leaving you on the side of the road. I honestly cant remember when i changed mine but it was somewhere around the same mileage.
