Default CEL caused by Coolant Sensor

Hello,

I just got my car back from the shop getting something fixed and they said that my CEL is being caused by a faulty coolant sensor. My temp gauge hasnt been working for a while and they wanted $250 to replace the sensor and I was wondering how hard this is to do by myself and if anyone could give me any suggestions?

The car is a 2003 a4 1.8t quattro

Thanks, Nick

Well, from what I have gathered, there are 2 coolant sensors, is there any way to know which one without knowing the code? Those scheisters wouldn't give me the code

There is the coolant temperature sensor and a coolant level sensor. If your temp gauge isn't working properly your problem is the coolant temperature sensor.

Also, you may want to take your car somewhere and get it scanned at a place that will give you the codes (Autozone, Pep Boys etc). Even if they use a generic scanner, post the codes and someone will decipher them for you. You may have other issues going on that are causing your CEL.
