Default cold air intake

I want to buy tubes and a cone air filter and make a cold air inkake. I wanted to spend around $50. Is this a good idea to do this over buying a drop in K N filter. People at a car store said that it would help my turbo and give me a small gain in power. What do you all think

The stock intake on our cars is actually quite good. Pesonally, I use a K&N drop in filter in my stock airbox. You have to be careful when using any kind of oiled filter (cone or drop in) as some people have reported problems with them fouling the MAF.

If you are going to do a cone filter mod don't expect any kinds of massive gains. There are some write ups around here about doing them though. It isn't really that difficult and you have the right idea about buying a filter and some tube. Most folks also do some kind of heat shield and mounting mod as well. There are also a couple of write ups about doing a full airbox mod with drilling holes and routing all sorts of dryer vent tubing. All seems like too much work to me for very little gains either way.

good luck and keep us updated.

A cold air intake does NOTHING to a turbo equipped car. The air is compressed when going thru the turbo which will make it VERY HOT. Its the intercoolers job of cooling down the charge. You would be much better off installing a good FMIC upgrade. If you look at most 500+ horsepower set ups the air filter is wide open next to the engine as close as it can be to the turbo. This is done for a reason, the turbo has less piping to pull air thru giving it a decreased spool time, but a CAI won't make you ANY gains.
