Angry Cooling Issues

Hey Guys,

I'm having some trouble with my car, but it's sporadic. Sometimes it runs fine and other times it will get hot. Not over heating but above where it's supposed to be. I have no CEL. I have noticed one change, (and this is what I think is the problem) that the fans do not come on typically like they used to. Sometimes they'll come on for a second or so, and then shut back off..and this is when the engine is already hot. Then they'll come back on after about 10 seconds, etc. Any idea what could be causing this? Thanks for any advice you can give me.

Darren

Run a scanner through it, or a VAGcom, your fan control unit went out I believe, this will tell you on the code that it returns.

Wow, I hope not! $270 part!!! Ahhh!!! I may have to take it to Autozone, I don't have a code scanner. But I will let you know, if I get any, what they are.

Yeah you're looking at a bit of money. I believe someone over in Audizine has one for sale if you need it.

If you are comfortable splicing wires, replacing the coolant fan control module is relatively easy.

I replaced mine about a year ago, and it took me about 10 minutes. Its bolted to the top of the radiator, so you can access it easily.

hmmm, I take that you never ran the code... There's two things that cause this, it could be your thermostat or the "other" coolant temperature sensor, run the codes before you waste any more money.
