cup holder
Had a similar problem a while ago, ponied up the $75 for a replacement and went through switch-out. Will post photos and step by step when i get a few.
For anyone that has a broken cup-holder, might be a non-replacement option.
On mine, the front panel broke off - was unsightly.
There are 2 lugs on either side of the slide out cup holder, if you depress both (thumb and forefinger will do it) the cupholder is still slid out, but the spring-up "diagonal" part then goes flat.
You can then reattach the front portion to the cupholder, click the "diagonal" part back up and the cup-holder is back t being functiona.
Sorry if that is abstract, will post pictures later.

The B6 armrest does, but if you have a manual, is kind of useless, the B7 console has the actual cupholders in the console next to the Parking brake.
I agree that the cup holders suck. I had the same problem with the one above the stereo where the piece that holds in smaller cups broke off so now I just use the cup holder in the center armrest.
One of my coworkers always busts my chops about how for such an expensive car (compared to his P.O.S. chevy cobalt) they could have made some better cup holders. I always reply that I would rather have the engineers focus on making a car with better performance than focusing on where/how many cup holders the car should have.

It's nearly impossible to shift if you have a manual with a big ole soda cup in that first cup holder. Not only did I spill coffee the first time to realize how craptastic the indash was, but worst of all is downshifting an elbow into a cup and exploding the lid off in an eruption of cola everywhere... F.M.L.!!!
