Default Cylinder 5 Misfire

2002 A4 Quattro 3.0L 151,000 miles

Other than burning a quart of oil per 1000 miles, the car was running fine. The car was given to my son who was told to watch the oil level. He left to drive from the Chicago area to Minneapolis where he lives. About half way through the trip the car stopped running and was towed to the nearest Audi dealer in Lacrosse, Wisconsin. Dealer diagnosis -- the engine is toast and they'll replace it with a new or rebuilt engine. No way. We retrieved the car on a flat bed trailer and towed it back to Chicago. Conversations with my son and the service department at the dealer revealed the following. The reason the car stopped running was that it was out of fuel. My son was so worried about the oil level that he neglected to monitor the fuel gauge. And on the subject of oil level, he had trouble reading the dipstick and kept adding oil. I drained over eight quarts of oil when I got the car home. So basically two things occurred when the problem started.
  • The car ran out of fuel
  • The car was overfilled with oil
The fault codes that I get from VAG COM are as follows: (Occasionally I have also had misfire on Cylinder 6 but this is the latest log.)
4 Faults Found:
  • 16684 - Random/Multiple Cylinder Misfire Detected P0300 - 001 -
  • 16689 - Cylinder 5 P0305 - 001 - Misfire Detected
  • 19761 - B2 P3305 - 002 - Exhaust Cam Pos. Sensor (G301) / Crank Pos. Sensor (G28) Incorr. Correl.
  • 19760 - B1 P3304 - 002 - Exhaust Cam Pos. Sensor (G300) / Crank Pos. Sensor (G28) Incorr. Correl.
  • Readiness: 0110 1101

I have done the following in troubleshooting with no improvement or change in fault codes. I cleared codes after each procedure and the identical codes always return .
  • Swapped spark plugs between cylinder 5 and cylinder 4
  • Swapped ignition coils between cylinder 5 and cylinder 4
  • Swapped fuel injectors between cylinder 5 and cylinder 4
  • Swapped cam position sensors between bank 1 and bank 2
I'm running out of ideas. Anyone have ideas?

Six weeks on, I'll bet you have solved it. Compression check is what I'd try next. If that was OK, then wiring connections between ECU and coils, injectors.
