Default Different trunk release problem

Hi, new member here. I recently bought a 2002 A4 1.8Q with 122K miles, and I'm loving it.
I seem to have a problem with the trunk that's not quite like any one I've found on the forums, though. It looks like the typical problem is in the trunk latch, and when it happens you can't open the trunk with either the key fob or the button in the door. When I bought the car about 3 weeks ago, I did test the door button and it worked. It's not working now, but I can open the trunk with the keyfob just fine. Also, there seems to be a spot on the button that looks like it might light up when activated; I never noticed whether it lit up when it was working, but I'm sure it doesn't now.

Any suggestions?

So it unlocks fine with the key fob, but it won't if you have the car just unlocked? The trunk should open if ALL the doors are unlocked.

I have the same problem as the original poster. The trunk only opens with the keyfob, but won't open either via the driver side door button, or the button on the trunk itself if all doors are unlocked.

Any thoughts?

With how many other problems i'm having, this is low on my priority list, but having a fix would be nice.

OK, PEBCAK (or, in this case, PEBSASW). I saw mention of a valet mode on another thread and examined the trunk keyhole. I'm not sure how, but it got put in valet mode. Switched it out and now the trunk release in the door works as expected.

Ultor, what is valet mode and how did you switch your car out of it?

p.s., for the sake of the internet and to make searching more useful for everyone involved, please post details on how things were fixed when you do, indeed, fix things yourself

For posterity:

The trunk related valet mode is set by inserting the key into the trunk's keyhole and turning it one quarter turn clockwise or counter clockwise and then removing the key.

I can't remember which is which, but it is a quick test either way while at your car.
