Unhappy Digital Read-Out Error? PLS HLP!

I noticed something odd today on the dash of my ’04 A4, particularly where it states the KM left on the tank.

Whenever I completely fill the tank up, the dash always stated between 780 and 800 km. It has always been this way since I bought the car (have had it for about a year now). I only put in gas when the tank is on E and the dash reads 10 km or lower, and fill it up completely. When I did that this morning, however, the dash read 640 km! I turned the car off and waited and restarted it, and still 640 km. During my lunch break, I tried again, and it read 630 km (I’m assuming from haven driven to work).

Any reason why it’s starting at 640 now, as opposed to 800 as it has always done?! I maintain my car regularly and get oil changes and whatnot done at the right times from the Audi dealer close to my house. I don't understand why it would change like that ... please help.

Cheers,

- I Love Lagar -

Yea the gas gauge still works correctly and reads full after I fill-up.

The digital read-out still counts down as normal aswell, but it just starts at about 150km lower than normal.

Could just be a difference in the average mpg. Flip the display to average and see what it says.

See if theres a switch on the end of your wiper control arm. This was optional in some years so it may not be there.

Haha, who wouldn't? I'm sure the 800KMs was just an average that was displayed.

One I decided to actually see how much I got out of a tank. So I filled it up completely, reset the the count on the dash, and just kept track as accurately as possible through out the days until the tank absolutely was on E (Digital output read zero). When that day came I drove around and around two gas stations near my house until I finally stopped haha (similar to Kramer's adventure on Seinfeld). Good thing I ended up just down the road from the gas station, and kept a gas container in the trunk.

I ended up with a count of approximately 745KMs.

Don't worry about it. It's an estimate of how many KM or miles you can get with your current level of gas based on your KM/gallon average. It's true that perhaps the gas volume isn't reading right but I highly doubt it. Odds are you somehow erased your computer stored average KM/gallon and it's now calculating on a new number OR you recently have been getting less KM/gallon and it's adjusting it to match.
