Any input would be appreciated. I did a search but could not really find anything.

I have a 2002 1.8T automatic and over the last week or so I have noticed a rattle/metallic noise coming from the front of the engine.

It is noticeable at idle, when I rev the engine in park or during acceleration at low speeds, and when I take my foot off the gas and the engine winds down. Aside from that the car seems to perform fine. No CEL and the oil level is OK.

Has anyone experienced anything similar or have an idea of what may be causing this rattle noise?

Well I dropped her off at my local import shop that specializes in VW/Audi, where i always take for work. They deteremined it is the timing belt tensioner that is bad. Funny thing is I got my timing belt done by them about 2 years ago. They quoted me about $350 for labor and $150 for the part. Does that sound right?
