Front brake pad question $$
Hi
I just spoke to my Audi dealer regarding replacing my front brake pads because after my last service (35,000 mile) they suggested that l should do it withing 3/4000 miles based on the way it's driven (highway).
They came back with a $590 price which includes everything including rotors. I questioned them on why l would need rotors at 35,000 miles and they said something feeble about if the rotors are resurfaced it would throw off the wear bands. And that Audi requires when you change brake pads you have to change the rotors!!!!!
What's your take about the rotors.
Thanks
Alan

That's almost BS i think. I can't be completely sure because I just may be wrong, but I've never replaced my rotor everytime i replaced my pads and it's fine. You can tell when you need to replace your rotor when it has streaks in it and a lip to the outside edge. It could be that the pads last soo long that when you finally do replace a pad, you'll have to replace the rotor as well, but as far as I know, you shouldn't have to do that. Do the pads yourself, I'm a noob and I was able to figure it out.
You can change the pads without the rotors as long as you don't have extremely odd pad wear. 35K is not enough to bring a rotor to replacement unless (a) they were cheap rotors (b) you drive very aggressively.
Like dubgli says - check to see if the rotor has a lip on it where the pad touches.
Where are you located? I have some new front rotors and pads I am selling.
