Gas Mileage problem, please help
Hello, I have recently purchased a 2004 a4 quattro 6mt, and I have a couple questions about the gas mileage. I have read reviews, forums etc. all of them saying that I should be getting around 29 miles hwy. Infact my dash tells me that I am getting 29-31 mpg. But when I filled up for the 3rd time yesterday I decided to do the math because it was looking a little low. I came up with 23.4 mpg. I dont feel like it should be that low. I drive almost 100 miles every day all hwy to work and back. I do not abuse my car, I bought it for gas mileage more than anything. When I bought it, my fuel filter failed and I had to have it replaced. could it be that they put it in wrong and it is leaking?
Thank you very much for all of your help

HAve you had the temperature sensor and oxygen sensor checked? If your car is in top condition and all checked out for mechanical and other problems, then the problem has to be the nut behind the wheel....!!!
Do you use cruise control on the highway? I usually get 37mpg on the highway using cruise control at 70mph. For city driving, try to coast a lot in neutral, time the traffic lights to minimize braking and acceleration, and go easy on the gas pedal.

I would agree that it might be me if I drove in town more, but like I said I do 100 miles a day and 95% of that is all hwy, cruise control at 70-72 mph. So i will check my filter and tires and stuff and get back. Thank you for the response
Yes, first things to check are tires inflated properly, clean air filter (including the snow catch thing where the intake meets the airbox!), plugs not fouled and gapped correctly (0.032" if stock, closer to 0.028" if chipped).
You already did the fuel filter so that's good. You're using premium, right? Gas stations do switch to a crappier winter mix of gas in colder months so that may cause a slight loss in mpg.
