help people
ok today i was driving well first off i have a a4 1.8tq ok so i was driving and all the sudden my car turns off on me. my wheel locked up and i almost hit a curb. i tried ti start it again and it sounded like it wanted ti start but i just wouldn't. so i called AAA they towed it to the dealer and he was telling me it is my fuel pump i said how do u know. he sprayed some stuff on my engine somewhere i don't know of because i was sitting in my car and it turned on. then as soon as he stopped spraying my car died again. so it must be the fuel pump. so asof now my car is at the dealer.
question 1 how much do u guys think this will cost me?
question 2 isnt the fuel pump replaced when u do your services?
question 3 could it be something else?

Well, ECS has the part for $235, so I imagine that the dealer will probably charge you 1.5X or 2X that for the part, plus labor for the installation. I do not know how many hours of labor it is, but you're probably looking at a significant chunk for the parts alone, and that's presuming they don't find anything else that "needs" replacing while they're in there.
As to the question of the pump being replaced during normal servicing, I think you might be confusing it with the water pump, which is typically replaced when you do the timing belt (typically between 65 and 80K miles). I could be off my rocker on this one, but I don't recall seeing fuel pump replacement listed as part of the normal services when I looked through the maintenance section of my owner's manual. Admittedly, that was a while ago, and/or I could just have missed it, so don't assume I'm right on that one.

ok the dealer called me and they told me my fuel filter was cloged and that caused my fuel pump to go bad so they said it will be 980 for both parts and the labor ugh i dont know what to do
but no i never heard a whining noise....maybe i did but thought nothing of it

I thought I needed a fuel pump, but my problem seemed to be something else. Yours does sound like it's the fuel pump, but I can't be sure just by reading this post.
If you search either this forum or Audi World you'll find at least one good thread on testing your fuel pump, I know I read it when I thought it was my problem, but basically you need to test if your fuel pump is even getting power, you can test it at the fuse or at the wire harness connected to your fuel pump.
If it is indeed your fuel pump, I've seen the price range from $200 - $650 depending on where you get it both locally or over the internet. I myself would change the fuel filter at the same time, so I don't think the mechanic is trying to screw you on suggesting that, and a fuel filter shouldn't cost that much (for an Audi anyway).
If you plan on doing the repair yourself, I wouldn't consider it that hard, you just need to pay attention to detail and safety as you're going to be messing with fuel. Check out the forums I'm sure I've seen a "How to" for replacing your fuel pump and filter, or you can buy the chilton manual.
Hope that helps, I'm not expert though.

DIY this and youll wonder why they are charging 980. How much labor is that? Anyone who has changed this pump before could do it in less than 1 hour.
Also, what do you mean by the wheel locked up? Like the ignition was turned off and the steering wheel locked??
