Wife rear ended someone... Damage visible plus passenger side airbag deployed and broke windshield.I assume insurance company will total it but I doubt that will offer much - has 200K but runs great. I'm thinking maybe get her something else and fix this one.

in my opinion with replacing air bag and sensor your looking at big bucks let alone your bumper cover, wind shield, plus anything else that your gonna have to fix jus so u can get a salvage/rebuilt title...

yeah insurance will likely total it if the airbag is deployed. and probably not worth the hassle for you to have a salvage title on a 200k mile car if you want to fix her back up.

I didn't think of the salvage title side of things. Not sure how that works. If I told the insurance company (who I haven't heard from yet) that I was just going to fix it myself, didn't want any money, would there still be a salvage title? It just seems that I would have to throw some parts at it to repair the damage, bumper cover, hood, windshield etc. I have no idea on the process to replace the air bag though. Can that just be swapped in from a donor?

 

if the insurance company totals it you would have to buy it back from them. I would say the most expensive part of fixing that amount of damage would be the front bumper and rebar.

 

$300 to replace the windshield. Happened to get a quote today as I took a big rock on the freeway that left a crack too big to fill. Good luck.

 

Just take whatever they will give you and buy another. Even if you fix it, it will never be the same car it was.

 

Case Closed. Talked to insurance and they are totalling it. $7900 in damage. Gave me an excellent offer above what I could ever get for it. Even with 100,000 less miles I would say. WooHoo!

Now I can look for an A3 or Avant Wagon. And it needs to happen quick. I came home from a meeting last night and the wife was looking online at cars. Had picked out a Subaru Forester and the ugliest Mazda I have ever see...

 

Well my wife hit a curb with my 1998 a6 quattro. The front bumper cover is $600 but she did 5K in suspension damage. But the body shop didnt see all the damage when they started. The ins company gave them a cap of $3,600 before they started. The original estimate was $2,500. But once they turn the first wrench the total goes out the window. They will have to fix it if they start working on it. Also a few months ago I replaced the windshield it was $300-$400. Good luck man.

 

I totaled a 2000 b5 with 118k.. and they gave me 7667.. can't complain.. looking to get a b6 or Lexus is300.. I'm happy with the totaling.. it was irreplaceable..
