My audi has 128,000 miles. I bought the car with 68,000 miles and do all my own maintenance. I replace the plugs every 40,000 miles and replaced them last at 120,000. I did not see anything weird with the plugs when I replaced them last. When I have sometime I will pull them again to take a look. Could it be an ignition control module? Does this car have one?

also, when you changed your coils, did you use 06C905115J or the new ones 06C905115M, remember that the J's had problems that is why they started using M's

I will take a look at the plugs. I use the more expensive platinum NGK plugs that are recommend for the car usually around $10-$12 a plug but I get your point. I will look at the at the coil pack part # as well. They were replaced about two years ago under the last re-call so I am assuming they are the newer hatachi coil packs. I do see a lot of postings of this issue regard the 3.0L and no definitive answer or list of what to troubleshoot besides coil packs and plugs. Again, my problem is vary intermittent. Drive the car for a few thousand miles then misfire for 30 secs once or twice throws a CEL and then corrects itself. I use my OBD 2 scanner, clear the codes and I am good for hundreds of miles again. I have been waiting for something to fail but it has not happened yet. At this point I clear the codes and drive.

Have you tried using vcds and monitor your misfires live?

No, I have not looked at the misfire when they are happening. The problem is intermittent and usually goes away before I have a chance to take a look at it.

hdaniels,

I have the exact same problem as you. 2002 a4 3.0 but 6 spd. As far as symptoms we are the same... I can drive for a few thousand miles then misfire for less than a minute then it "fixes itself" and I continue driving. Sometimes it fixes itself before I can hook up the reader so I am SOL but other times I get it and it was showing p0305 (cylinder 5 misfire). After that I had the recall done on my CP by dealer.... soon after still had misfire on cyl 5 so I changed all the plugs with the same NGK as you from the factory and switched CP that was in #5 to #2 to see if it followed. Two days ago CEL came on and car did its normal shutter for about 45 seconds. I was able to check codes and p0300 cyl 5. Not sure where to go from here because the misfire did not follow the CP.

Blackringed, this one has me stumped. I am really good at diagnosing problems and fixing them especially with a little help from the forums on where to look. I use to be a mechanic prior to what I do now and I still cannot figure it out. I am thinking it's computer / electronics related somehow.
