Default Mpg

I've had an '02 A4 Avant Quattro 3.0 for 2 years now, and I love the car, but I gotta say the fuel economy is that of an SUV according to the dash readout. Maybe 10mpg in the city and I'm lucky to break 21 on the highway. I just did a 300 mile drive through the Catskills and Adirondaks and came away with roughly 18mpg average, albeit I was doing 75mph most of the way.
I don't drive particularly aggressive, I know cars get their ideal economy between 55-65mph but is 10mph more plus the weight of Quattro and the thirst of a V6 really that inefficient?
Do you guys feel like your average MPG computer is accurate?
PS I have brand new tires, properly inflated and the car has no trouble codes etc.

if you find answer to this please let me know, im having the same issue on mine. properly inflated tires, recently changed oil and filter, air filter, new spark plugs, cleaned MAF sensor, premium gas 93 oct., and rarely let it rev past 2000 rpms. getting average of 10-12 mpg.

mmm adirondacks

That's some pretty bad mileage, something must be wrong. Have you calculated the mileage by dividing miles driven by amount of gas used to refill it?

Make sure the tire size is the same as your old ones. The trip computer has a formula that calculates MPG by comparing how many times your wheels turn to how much fuel is consumed. If a larger diameter tire is used it makes your speedometer and odometer readings lower than they really are. This in turn lowers your assumed MPG. If you have a GPS check your GPS speed to your speedometer speed. If they are off more than a couple MPH something may not be right.

If the speeds are correct then try a tank of gas and calculate your mileage the old fashion way by dividing miles traveled by gallons of gas consumed

hi, my first post here. I had a Golf before, then I went to the dark side. I am back though. Have a 05 A4 B6 3.0, in winter HWY I get 21 on the low side and 24 if it's a little warmer. In summer I actually get 27 indicated, so maybe 25/26mgg actually.
I use Lucas fuel treatment on every gas tank. I am not trying to start a posting war if this is a good thing to use or not. I like it.

10 mpg? Damn, that's rough.

My 3.0 makes about 17 or 18 around town, and that's when I'm not driving for better fuel economy. On the highway, I can usually average 23-25 mpg doing 75-80 mph.

The wheel diameter claim sounds pretty legit to me.

I'm thinking that wheel diam. is an issue as well. I took my first "extended" drive down to Disneyland a couple weekends ago. I averaged 26mpg going ~80mph. That is really good compared to what i was getting in my old car. But by the time i was done with that tank i probably only got about 19-20mpg average. So i'd assume that my city driving is usually around 15-16mpg, not bad at all though for the way i drive.

I did calculate my mpg today, it's very cold right now in Ohio, I drive 80% hwy in rush hour traffic, 18.8mpg!!! (Indicated as 20mpg, I know that the indicator only calculates the mpg onyly every so many ft, or something like it)

I'm on the stock 16"wheels, most of my MPG figures were from the stock Pirelli P6's that I just replaced with Michellins. What diameter issues could I be having?
My city driving is around NYC which is clearly not what the EPA had in mind when they created the category

Check to make sure your tire size is the same as the old P6's. For 16 inch rims the size should be 215/55R16
