n00b needs purchase advice!
Hi, All! Great forum you have here. I have some questions regarding whether or not I should purchase this 2003 (or '04?)A4 1.8T convertible with 83,000 miles.
The local Nissan dealer is asking $12,900 for the car. Keep in mind that I live inSt. Croix in the Virgin Islandswhere cars generally cost $3000-$4000 more than they do in the states due to shipping and customs. It runs and drives fine, and everything seems to operate properly BUT the dealer told me the turbo is "bypassed". I don't know if that's correct or not, I think it's just locked up. There's no Audi dealership here so the previous owner probably used the local oil change service with their cheap oil rather than syntheticand fried the bearings. The check engine light is also on and it seems to be leaking oil. The oil looks like it's coming from a pipe sticking out on the driver's side of the engine that has a rubber cap on it, but I'm not sure. It's not a huge leak.
So...here's my questions:
1. Can I drive it with the turbo inop without screwing anything up?
2. Would the turbo cause the check engine light or is that likely to be another problem?
3. How likely is it that I could get another 30,000 miles out of it with just general maintenance?
4. What would it take for someone to fix the turbo?
Thanks for any advice you can provide!
