oil change
For summer I'd use 5W30.... 0W40 is too thin for my taste. With that said, the manual says that the 02 A4's leave the factory with 0W30 in them BUT the manual also recommends changing it with 5W40 synthetic. The choice is your but don;t go too low in viscosity. 0W40 for summer??? I'd play it safe if I were you.
0W-40 is Audi's reccomended viscosity for these cars. The 0W-40 is a higher viscosity oil actually. It offers less resistance during startup and higher protection under operating temps.
The viscosity rating of a motor oil is determined in a laboratory by a Society of Automotive Engineers (SAE) test procedure. The viscosity of the oil is measured and given a number, which some people also refer to as the "weight" (thickness) of the oil. The lower the viscosity rating or weight, the thinner the oil. The higher the viscosity rating, the thicker the oil.
Low viscosity motor oils that pour easily at low temperatures typically have a "5W" or "10W" rating. There are also 15W and 20W grade motor oils.
Higher viscosity motor oils that are thicker and better suited for high temperature operation typically have an SAE 30, 40 or even 50 grade rating.
Hope that helps.

Actually Davyboi that does help thanks. Now my next question is... when you see 5W30 Does this mean it is
5weight and 30 or 5 and weight is 30.... know what I mean?
if the 5 is the weight then what is the 30 and if the weight refers to the 30 as the number then what does the 5 mean????
I'm not blonde but I am having a blonde moment.

I believe that the 5 is the "Pour Point".. Pour point is 5°F above the point at which a chilled oil shows no movement at the surface for 5 seconds when inclined.

I own a 04' 1.8T. What would be the interval changing times for a car that doesn't see much driving? In other words if you can't go by the miles, how many months? Also, I don't have a dealership on island (shipping is crazy to Hawaii), so I have to go after market. Has the Wix or Napa Gold brand enlarged their filters per Audi's sludge problem?
