Default Need to replace long block on my 02, anyone done this?

ok here is my story. Three weeks ago my family of four decided to go on a road trip. Drove from Washington to California. At about 50-60 miles till we hit Anaheim oil lamp came on so I stop and checked. Added 1quart oil and kept on my way, lamp dissappeared for a while and came on again after couple of miles. Stop and checked again but oil was good, checked manual and it said that I need to stop and call the dealership. However, since it was past 12am and still no where near town I pushed on. By the time we got to disneyland blvd I noticed the car losing power and engine noise was apparent. When I finally parked the car it was making a diesel like engine noise when a diesel is idle.

Since I got the car there, I still have to get it back. Brought it to Midas on Saturday morning since they were the only one open. I was told don't drive it, need to open the engine to know for sure, sounds like internal damage, however my trip was only planned for four days and I can't afford to stay other wise i'll be in big trouble job wise. One mechanic finally, said that an oil change might just what you need. So they did, full sythetic and they added lucas to help with the sludge they said.

To cut my story shorter, car drove for almost 600 miles till it finally died for good. When I tried starting it only noise you'll hear was an engine humm or like the engine spinning but no actual starting noise or anything catching. Had to tow it back home.

My local mechanic said that I need a new/use long block. I've been quoted $7000 for a new long block + any minor parts + labor. I just bought that car Dec. 13, 08 for $12,000 almost $13,000. It run great till that long trip.

I'm looking for anyone that had long block replaced. Need any info on what matches what exactly. I've since been looking for a used long block but wanna make sure everything matches. Thanks for any help.

Car Info:
02 A4 1.8t quattro
engine code amb
its has 82,000 more or less
VIN waulc68e02a121094

Hmmm,

7k sounds about right for a new engine + parts and labor. When I had my Vdub GTI, I went to the VW dealership and asked how much for a new VR6 engine and they quoted 6000 for the block alone. NO pistons, NO wiring harness, NOTHING!!!!

Anyone else?????
