Reliability of '02 A4 3.0? I'm looking at one...
Hi there. New here, so thanks in advance to any who have input!
I'm looking at a used A4 3.0, auto, w/ around 60K. Good price, but I am a bit leery as a friend of mine has an '02 A4 that has been nothing but headaches (albeit a 1.8T.) He's had to replace the engine once and the transmission twice- it's been a money pit.
I've had three older Audi's in the past, and each one was great. I'd like to return to Audi, but am apprehensive. I'd rather hear from some enthusiasts than rely on canned reliability ratings from places such as MSN, etc.
So, if anyone has input on the '02 A4 3.0 I'd appreciate it!
Eric

i am not speaking from experience- just all the research I've been doing as i look for a 02. 03. 04 avant. with the car you referred to, you are about 20K away from a $3000.00 timing belt change (although there is some discussion about the price). I recently contacted a local shop that specializes in audis and they said that the 3.0 is indeed more expensive to work on. in general, it seems that how well the person took care of the car is paramount- i won't even consider a car without a service record. since sludge is an issue with the 1.8t, you want to make sure that there were regular oil changes with synthetic. I have a similar thread a bit further down- hopefully i'll get some feedback on reliability.
good luck

55k miles on my 02 3.0 and not a problem. i called a shop and they quoted me some where around $1500 for a complete TB and related. i think i will change the spark plugs real soon because my gas mileage is abysmal.
