Sirene like soundfrom the turbine
Hello,
I own an Audi A4 1.8TQ B6. I have done aprox. 150,000 km (94,000 miles).
Yesterday, I have started to hear a strange sound from the turbo. It sounds like a siren and I can hear when I accelerate.
From the garage they told me that the turbine starts to crack.
Is this the case?
If yes, do you think its a good idea to go for a bigger, more powerful turbine?
Any suggestions?

If it's the dentist drill sound, the seals on the turbo are toast. The turbine doesn't actually crack. The seals go and the blades grind against the turbo housing. The blades spin around the 100,000rpm mark. That seems to be pretty low mileage for the turbo to be done though.
If it sounds like a whistle, you probably have a torn/loose hose coupler. If it sounds like a dentist drill, then the turbo is done. I have seen one instance where the cat had clogged and was whistling under boost.
As far as turbo upgrades, there are plenty of options. It just depends on how much you're willing to spend.

yup. time for a new one, you can pickup a used K03 on the classifieds here, over on audizine, or vwvortex for $200-$300ish.
if you go bigger, skip the K04 and go to a GTRS, but by the time it's all said and done your looking at $3000-$5000 depending on the setup you want to go with (maybe squeeze by with $2000-$2500 for a used setup)
good luck!
