Default slack in clutch pedal

If I place my foot on my clutch pedal when it is in a fully returned state - I have about 2.5" of totally free travel before any resistance is met at all. I don't remeber my other VW being that much. I becamse aware of this because I have been having slight troubles shifting from one gear to another . . . . . does this sound to anyone like the clutch may be going out on this vehicle?

Stock clutch? I would say its about time for a new clutch. Our hydraulic clutches are self adjusting so the pedal height can only be changed by a worn out clutch.

Default Update

OK so I drove the car to the dealer today to leave it for them tomorrow. It's about a 30 minute drive - Halfway there, I noticed that after driving the car the firmness on the pedal increased significantly leaving an extremely small amount of play in the pedal - i.e. less than a half. Since I can see my office from my garage you can imagine I don't get out much - but today I noticed this. Why would the pedal firm up when the car has been driven?
