Default Spare Key

Hey guys,

New here. Just got an Audi about two weeks ago. A 2002 Audi A4. It's in great condition and drives awesome.

I bought the car used, obviously, and it only came with one key. I wanted to get a spare key since I only have one, just in case anything happened to the main one. I realize the Audi/VW keys are a bit different than your average key. How much does it cost to get another spare key? Can any locksmith do it? Do I have to go to an Audi dealership? I don't really care if the key is just a normal run-of-the-mill key, it doesn't have to be the keyless entry kind.

Thanks for your help.

I've been reading that a regular locksmith can cut the key, but the dealer has to program the transponder so that your car works with that key.

When I had mine made it was overall 250 USD, 90 for the key (dealer), 30 for the remote (ebay), and one hour labor from the dealer to program the transponder (130) not the remote.

Damn, 250 dollars? Wow. Looks like I may just be taking my chances with the one key.

Thanks for your help.
