Even on my 1.8T, the car has enough power to do a slow start from second. I don't have the issue but routinely start from second just to embarrass Civic drivers (kill them with steady and never-ending acceleration). I've started from third before as well, with slightly less ease. Get to know your clutch and it's your best friend.

As far as the chipped gear goes, I'd love to know the cause...
