Default Temp gauge intermitent on 04 A4 1.8t

after reading through tons of threads, i have not found anythread that is identicle to mine.... many are similar, but have extra problems...

Heres what my situation is...
my temp gauge is intermitent... for example... I'll be driving to work and the temp will show right in the middle...then drop to nothing...sometimes a few miles down the road it will come right back up..
other times it wont register at first then all of a sudden it jumps back to the middle...
it might be my imagination, but i swear that in a right turn the gauge responds
occasionally

my car runs great... i just got home from a long distant trip where i cruised at 85mph for hours with NO problems..

specifics...
fluid level is good
no mods done to the car
fan does not run when it doesnt seem that it should
heat works
A/C works

it sounds like from other threads that this may be a sensor, but being as Im a rookie and usually an aircooled VW guy, I am way out of my element...

and suggestions?

well i had the same prob with mine and also wasnt getting any heat from the heater, it went away after i flushed the heater core. so you could try that and if it doesnt work id say you need a new thermostat

nvm the thermostat thing i had a brainfart.... yea if the flushing doesnt help youll need to replace one of the sensors ...most likely the one on the back of the motor
