Timing Belt & Clutch Life Expectancy
I have an 04 A4 with just over 70,000 miles.
I'm on the original belt and clutch.
When should I expect both to go.
I commute in traffic, but am otherwise not abussive of the clutch.
Comments plese.
Thanks-
Bartlett

RE: Timing Belt & Clutch Life Expectancy
My search results pointed towards replacement of the belt @ 70-75, but I was curious as to how accurate that was.
Should I wait for warning signs on the belt (if yes, what would they be?) or just bite the bullet and replace the belt before 75 k.
I assume the clutch would be good until around 100k as I only have a stage 1 + mod and do not thrash on the clutch.
Thanks again.

^not really. its the tensioner that fails. the b6 has a better tensioner than the b5 so you can get away with changing it a bit later. audi says to do it at 90k, but i wouldn't push it past 80k. if it snaps you'll need to get your head rebuilt.
as for the clutch, it depends on how you drive. i had a k04 on my car for 100k and the clutch was perfectly fine. then one day i got drunk, told my friend to drive us home, and he completely burnt out my clutch (smoke was coming from it). one of my friends has 170k on a stock clutch, and then another friend burnt his out in 50k. you don't have to worry about it until it starts slipping under WOT

I replaced mine @ 85K along with the water pump. The belt had very little sign of wear, however, the tensioner cannot be inspected and often fails at different intervals. Cheap insurance if you can do it yourself...I would rate it a6 out of 10 if you have some mechanical experience...
good luck,

I have a 2003 1.8TQ with 105,000 miles on it. I am still on the stock clutch. Although it grabs at the top of the pedal stroke it does not slip at all. As for the timing belt, it was done at 81,000. I had that done and then drove from San Diego to Providence and in Salt Lake City...Sludge [:'(]

the high clutch engagement is common on audi's. right before mine went out i could shift by just tapping the pedal with my toe lol. engagement was maybe a quarter of an inch from the top

Thanks gang. I'll replace the belt at 80,000 and will see how long the clutch last. I've had clutches in the past range greatly based upon my age/stupidity. Hoping this one goes the long haul.
