CVTs are widely known for failures, and frequently cited as "when, not if they fail." read up on all the threads in the b6 forums where others have shared their tribulations with this transmission. i know there are a lot of them.

the most common issue is the TCM, and it is a lot of cash. i'd also be prepared for a very expensive rebuild or replacement in the future. audi has known about the problem for years, and there are no recalls on the matter, so don't bother trying to contact AofA about it.

if the lights aren't flashing now, the shop probably cleared the faults when it was diagnosing your codes, so they will likely come back.

sorry to share the bad news, but it's a fact of life cvt owners have to face.

I dont see any issue with driving, cars goes above 40 mph with rpm being below 2000. I took the car for inspection to independent auto work shop he is quoting 2900 for replacing TCM and flushing transmission oil for fixing P0706 code, is this right quote for replacing TCM? I took the car out of this shop drove for 17 miles now check engine light and PRND are not flashing, could this be some issue with wiring? or with transmission oil? please help me with your valuable suggestion.
Did you check the connector that connects the TCM to the transmission. If there is water or moisture it wii short out some signals...placing the traansmission in Fail safe mode and the flashing will start. Can you reverse?

I dont know how to check the connector, where is it located? I can reverse the car even when the PRND is flashing, I drove the car about 24 miles since yesterday. car goes above 40 mph without issues. for once since yesterday i saw once the car will not go beyond 20 mph, but when i started again later i was able to go beyond 40 mph.i think something is acting wierd.

The connector is on the transmission itself. it is circular and it is on a lead at the end of the transmission computer module, hence TCM.
A mechanic will have to get at it.
I have pictures and will enclose, once I found them....hold on.

Thanks for reply, today I drove car 6 miles to office, and back to home, no issues, PRND did not flash. but when tried to take the car out later in evening, I found the following observation

Key in Run Position, all PRND were displayed inverted, I tried to shift the gear, the Inverted display was for P and R gear when i move the Gear shifter to N and D display was proper. I started the engine moved the gear to R I was able to reverse the car and drive it however now PRND started flashing. I could not feel the transmission was in limp mode.

I found nice PDF explaining the multitronic transmission on internet this one shows 25 pin connector is this the one you were talking about? : http://www.volkspage.net/technik/ssp/ssp/SSP_228_d1.pdf

I am observing that PRND only flashes when i drive car come to standstill, and then shift the lever from D to P. and then when i try to start the car the PRND continue to flash, and then after few miles of drive flashing of PRND stops when the lever is in D.

Anyone found a dealer or shop that did the repair? If so, how much did it cost you? Thanks in advance!

Thanks for the links, however, it seems like Audi is trying to do the right thing, reducing the repair to a little over $1K including labor, and they guarantee the repair for 1 year... sounds descent to me..
