Default ...and the used B6 saga continues...

My son bought an '03 quattro about a month ago...super clean, woman owned, with about 120,000 on the odo.

I'm a BMW guy so please excuse my lack of knowledge on the Audi platform.

Being a used car I just changed the oil (Valvoline 5/40 syn).

He was leaving work, heard a strange noise, said it sounded like someone sticking their fingers in a cheap plastic fan. At the same time the red oil light started flashing and he is seeing "R 34"? Somewhere on the dash...shut the car down.

I'm about 30 miles from him right now and can't get to the car until it's towed home so I'm trying to describe his situation the best I can. He's not mechanical so I won't know more until I get a chance to look it over.

Any insight would be greatly appreciated. I did search, and understand the sludge probability, but the R34 has me stumped.

Default Car is home...

Udate: The info screen is showing "CD6" with "TR37" right below. The top end is rattling like a deisel.

id say that sounds like a lifter tap or a rod knock then.

Yeah, I'm thinking cam/lifters. It doesn't sound like rods.

And I'm thinking the "CD6" and "TR37" is just stereo information...woke up in the middle of the night with that one.

Default Sludge...

Thanks for the suggestions!

It was the infamous plugged oil pic up screen.

Any idea what thes big chunks are?

I pulled and cleaned the oilpan and screen and these were in the pickup.

Good news is, no more noise or codes!

Holy crap, looks like someone dropped a plastic plug into the crankcase. Not good!

Nice huh?

I'm convinced the wonderful couple who sold the car to me were told to get rid of it, being it had just had the timing belt, water pump/thermostat and coilpacks AND A BIG FILTER done.

The "rocks" are sludge and coking from the oilpan.

LOL, welcome to the Audi brotherhood of pain, friend.

Shoot, the B6 clutch DIY that everyone else uses has apparently been removed. I can't find one for the A4 B6 using google.
