I recently purchased an Audi A4 2002 1.8 turbo. After a month i started to notice water on the headliner after taking it to the carwash or when it rained. After researching on forums etc I had the drain pipes checked by a local mechanic and was given the all clear. I even had a new sunroof seal put on hoping this would cure it. I am now completely lost as to how to resolve this issue. Water seems to creep in when it rains and I am pretty sure its through the sunroof. Another mechanic mentioned a dodgy windscreen but water only seems to appear near the sunroof area so i am pretty sure it cannot be the windscreen. So to conclude, the drains are fine and there is no collection of water under the battery etc. Do you think I need to strip the headliner and perhaps look at the undertray? I have been told by my mechanic that a new sunroof might be needed and one of those would set me back £1000! I have even logged a complaint at Audi as I am really surprised that german engineering would still be facing such design issues. Has anyone had a similar experience?

I had a Passat (before audi) with same problem, twice! First time the water was passing through engine computer as chamber where is battery was blocked, second time due to sunroof, it was blocked front and rear drain cannal on left side, so I suggest to check all 4 cannals on sunroof. This rear chanales finished in rear wheals but zou have to remove the iner cover. Easy test, open sunroof completly and spill some water in every corner and look does the water is disapearing or stay in cannal, in meantime look on A and C pillar on the side where the water stay, water will run on the edge of the door to the floor.

I'm currently having the exact same issue with my 02' A4 1.8T Quattro, however I am quite the n00b when it comes to locating these drains I continue to read about. I've researched the internet, forums, how-to's and still can find these lil SOB's...

Currently the water is mostly on the passenger C-Panel but a small amount on driver side as well. See attached picture. If it is blocked, what is the best method to attempt an unclog? Also, where is the hole or actually drain in the sunroof???

If anyone has some descriptive solutions you would be an absolute incredible help! Thanks in advance and safe driving!!!

 

It could be your drains but the only DIY I know about is for the B5. That does seem indeed like your Sunroof drains.

 

Tried looking in the DIY and the B5 pages with no luck. Might you be able to point me in the right direction Dan?

 

This is the link for the B5 sunroof drain. Keep in mind that our B6s have a different set up so I don't know if our drains are going to be on the same spot, they will be on the top at the sunroof but I don't know where the exit would be.

For the rear drains you have to remove the rear wheel and iner cover, usually is enough to squeeze the ruber of end drain because all dirty is blocked on the end. there is pictures of ruber end of rear drain on my A4 avant 2004 b6.

 

From the fear of swiming pool in the car (that I had on my ex Passat with sunroof which I adore!), I am cleaning once a year the ends of the drains of the sunroof and very often chamber of the engine hood.

 

So that's where it is for the A4? Good to know Thanks novo...

 

there are a total of 6 drains on the car, two under the hood ( under the battery and under the ecu) and four around the sunroof (front and back). if you open your sunroof and look in ( might need a flashlight ) you will see two holes one on each side in the front corners just look you wont miss it the holes are the entry point to the drain the exit is in the door jam underneath the hinge. the rear drains on the sunroof arent quiet as accessible the entry is covered by the headliner and i could not figure out how to take it off , the exit is in the rear wheel-well , pull of the wheel and then the liner once you've done that you will see a rubber "nipple" thats the exit clean it out to the best of your abilities . i found that a 10 ga. ground wire works the best . if you have access to an air-compressor id suggest blowing some air in there as well.
