I get a whirring/buzzing noise from the petrol tank area even if the car is not running.

Fuel pump? Filter? But would they be running even if the engine is off?

Surely it's gonna kill my battery if it keeps whirring?

I had to replace my fuel pump last year. The noise was similar - like a small machine running under my back seat passenger side. I can't recall if it still happened after turning the car off, but replacing the filter stopped it immediately. I went to my dealer and had one of the techs sit in the car for a second and he diagnosed it.

Turns out a faulty car alarm was causing the whirring noise. Not the fuel system in the end. For now I've just disconnected the alarm.

 

wow. probably would have been the last thing I would have guessed! That's good to know though, add it to the list of quirks
