Default Would you recommend an A4 B6 1.8t automatic in need of . . .

. . . timing belt, water pump, thermostat, cam chain tensioner, and pulleys?

The car is at 142K miles, and the tensioner failed, putting the car into limp mode. The belt was last changed at 60K, so it needs immediate replacement.

Other than the engine work, and a little cosmetic attention on the front bumper, the car looks pretty good.

I've been driving A4 B5 manuals for the past decade, and I'm about due for an automatic.

Opinions?

If the tensioner failed, and the engine was running, it's going to need a top end rebuild. If the car isFWD, that auto is a CVT and you should run far away.

With that much major stuff needed, I am scared to wonder what else was neglected. I would walk away and find another car.

Agree with above -- if a tensioner failed and the TB slipped, valves hit pistons in an interference engine. Do you really want to take the risk that this car was the exception?
