Default 07 Audi A4 Sline Engine Problems

So I just purchased a 2007 Audi A4 S-Line with the expectation of having to replace a turbo. Just spent the last week replacing the turbo to find out the new one isn't doing anything either making me believe it's not the turbo that's bad. Let me outline all the problems I'm seeing with the car hopefully someone with more knowledge can help me identify what's wrong.

The turbo gauge sits at 0 psi the entire time I'm idle and driving we hear what we assume to be rushing air near the air filter, not sure if we are supposed to hear the air rushing out around there or not..

I have a CEL light and the ECP light on still. The car is hard to turn over so I think it's my Cranshaft sensor for the ECP light, not 100% sure. (Tried to read both codes and my vag com failed to communicate with the engine controller (I can communicate with other modules) and my obd2 program didn't identify the car (think that was software as I used ScanXL).

When I start the car it's real rough, definitely missing, and smell it running rich. When I drive it feels smooth, no lurching, stalling, etc. when I step on the gas to pick up speed the car will rev up to 4000rpm and seem to sit there, shifting (so the dash says) but not dropping RPM as the gears shift. None of this makes sense to me.

Anyone got any ideas? Possible ways I can scan with my vag com? I got a vagcom 409.1 I think and it came with a cd that looks to be some version of Ross tech vcds. I'm at a complete loss and really want to start driving my new car any help or advice on things to check is greatly appreciated!

What prompted you to replace the turbo?

Do you have access to a legitimate ross-tech cable?

"Not dropping RPM as the gears shift" -- this points to a failed torque converter.

I would first be looking for air leaks. You can test for air leaks with a can of starting fluid or carb cleaner.... I really can't recommend this method as it's potentially very dangerous. Diagnostics performed yourself is inexpensive, stay on that route until you've nailed down the issue.

I think there's multiple issues happening here and a scan is an absolute must at this point. Where are you located? Perhaps someone near you has a cable they can loan or scan for you.

Let us know how it goes.

Hey Toitle thanks for the info! I replaced the turbo as the person I purchased it from said her mechanic told her the turbo was shot and she would need to replace it. After getting that quote she opted to sell the car. She did not like the rough feeling while idle and replaced the car. For air leaks I actually got a pump for my other car. I'll have to dig it up, do you have a good point for me to connect to start testing a leak? As for the cable, I am located in Southern Delaware. Again thanks for the help!

I'm guessing this is a FWD Audi (not quattro)? You are just describing the normal functionality of the CVT transmission they used in all the FWD automatic models. Personally, I hate them, but to each their own. If you have a FWD car, this is normal behavior. Google CVT if you want to read up about it.

As to the boost problem, you seem to have a huge leak. Did you replace the diverter valve along with the turbo? It's one of the most common failure points of these cars.

edit: just googled a how to on the DV and found that a new one came with my turbo. Had no idea what that was! But the turbo came with new electronics for the two plugs that clip into it!

Sorry king it is actually a Quattro. I have not replaced the diverted valve but did read yesterday to replace it as a common B7 A4 problem as they usually go bad. As for a leak I really only hear air by the air vent on the top left of the car I got everything with the turbo reconnected real tight with gaskets. Is there anywhere else I can find a leak at on the engine or a point I can connect to for testing with a pump? Sorry for all the questions and thanks for the help!

I would start with the DV. It's pretty easy to change out. After that, here's a link to a boost leak tester you can make at home: :: a4mods.com :: - The Premiere Audi A4 Modification Guide and Pictures Library The B6 and B7 are pretty similar so a lot of that should be the same.

ill be sure to check the valve however I did have a brand new one come with the turbo, from what I read it sounds like it will be easy to see if it is bad if it's got the old non piston type design.

Sounds like a vacuum leak. There is a hose under the air box that might have come off (mine did and I thought my turbo had gone). I had very similar symptoms that you are describing (except the hard to start) including a loud air noise. If the turbo is bad you will usually get lots of smoke out of the tail pipe.

Check for leaks and also make sure your oil dip stick is fully seated. I have now on two occasions checked my oil and did get the dip stick pushed all the way down. Both times my car ran fine under power and idle horrible! Thus making me the dip stick

Haha that's pretty interesting I will have a look. I rented a vag com today so I will be using that by Monday hopefully and will also take a look for that hose around the air box. I have in fact checked the dip stick a couple times and I'll make sure it's all the way down 😂 Hmm as far as the smoke out of the tail pipe everything's pretty clear but you can definitely smell it running rich lol I'll have a look tonight and see what I can find!

Update: Ran the Vagcom yesterday and got this list of error codes. Anyone got any previous experience with how these may correlate? The car runs too well to really have all of these sensors and parts be broken I feel like I'm dealing with something larger such as an ECU going bad or something. Though I know I've got a leak or pump broken somewhere due to the turbo siting at 0 but I couldn't imagine all these other parts are really broken. Anyway, before I start pouring hours into diagnosing all this figured I'd see if anyone has advice or knows what these may be related to!
