Gas Cap Loose - Check Engine Light
Hi All - I'm getting a "Loose Gas Cap" error code on my 2006 Audi A4, which is causing the check engine light to go on. The Gas cap is definitely on there tightly. I've had the code cleared and have been watching how tightly I am putting back the gas cap and the code keeps showing up ...

I'm not hearing any sounds from the gas pump ... Any other ideas on what could be causing the error code? Maybe a gas leak in the system?

Could be the gas cap itself. If it was dropped just right, it could have a crack that is letting pressure escape.

The cap has one of those ties on it that keeps it attached to the car. It's a cheap way to troubleshoot though ... I'll buy another.

The one time my Mustang failed emissions inspection, it was that the cap wouldn't hold pressure anymore. It never threw a code, but replacing the cap fixed my emissions problem. The point of this story is that it too had a strap holding it on--they can just fail eventually.
