Tonight both low beams went out. Had to use the fog lamps to get home. The hi beams work, but no lo beams. There is a small lamp next to the hi beam bulb that was on. I guess that is the DRL. Anyway it seems unlikely that both bulbs would go out at the same time. What would be the best way to troubleshoot this problem? Is there a separate fuse for the lo beams? Maybe a switch problem? Any ideas really appreciated.
Just a FYI....got the lo beam headlamps fixed. This is on a 2007 A4 2.0t with the H7 halogens. Since both went out at the same time, I thought there may be a more serious issue maybe with the switch or electrical system control module. Anyway, the passenger side seemed a little more easier to get to than the drivers side since the power steering reservoir was really close. On the passenger side, I removed the air intake and removed the plastic cover from the back of the headlight housing. At that point, I could see the electrical connector. Just to verify that I was getting voltage to the bulb, I took my meter and was able to verify that I was getting 12v onto the electrical connector. That was a good thing. At least I knew the bulb had to be shot. I carefully removed the electrical connector. I then took an inspection mirror and flashlite to see how the bulb was mounted. It appeared to be held in by a round metal ring that had 3 compression points holding the bulb in. Various internet sites indicated that this ring would come off, but mine did not. After looking more closely, it appeared that the bulb would simply come out by having the bulb flange compressing the 3 points. Sure enough, I took a hookbill needle nose pliers and grabbed one of the electrical contacts and it came right out. Definitely burnt filament. Took new bulb and attached it first to the electrical connector and oriented it correctly and pushed right in. Just be sure not to touch the bulb itself. I thought the drivers side was going to be more difficult since the power steering resevoir was really close. I removed the 2 bolts that secure it to the fender wall, but it really didn't move it much. Removed the plastic cover from the headlamp housing. I was attempting to pull off the electrical connector, but I noticed that the bulb came right out with it. Also, definitely a bad bulb. Put new bulb on connector, pushed back in. buttoned everything up...viola!!! lo beams working!

The bulb,when on,is very hot and the oils from your hand create a hotspot
that would get hotter than the other part of the bulb.Then it would blowout
and you would have to replace again,along with removing all the little shards of
glass in the housing.
